How we evaluate products
Responsible Investment strategies, processes, practices and disclosures are assessed against the eight criteria for product certification in the Responsible Investment Standard and accompanying Guidance and Assessment Notes.
What are the requirements?
In order to certify products as certified responsible investments, RIAA assesses them against its RI Certification Standard. The Certification Standard is underpinned by eight requirements that act as the guiding principles of the RI Certification Program. Since its inception the RI Certification Standard has evolved significantly, reflecting the dynamic evolution of responsible investment. These eight requirements are:
- RI strategies are formal, disclosed, consistent, auditable and fit for purpose
- Labels are clear, honest and not misleading
- Product avoids significant harm
- Discloses full holdings, performance, sustainability outcomes and engagement and voting practices
- Managed by active stewards, and managers can detail the stewardship practices and outcomes
- Organisation has formal commitment to responsible investment
- Organisation provides educational information to members and customers about RI strategies

Overview
The U Ethical Growth Portfolio provides exposure to a diversified portfolio of predominantly growth assets subject to U Ethical’s ethical investment policy. Growth assets may include equities (Australian and international), property and alternatives. Income assets may include cash and fixed income securities and assets. The Portfolio aims to achieve income and capital stability and is available to not-for-profit organisations that are registered for charity tax concessions.
Description
Our investment process seeks to ensure that our portfolio holdings are aligned with our clients’ financial and ethical expectations. The application of our Ethical Investment Policy varies depending on the asset class.
For equities and fixed income issuers, we apply a top-down approach to define our investable universe, excluding companies and issuers involved in industries or activities that conflict with our Ethical Investment Policy (using strict materiality thresholds), issuers involved in severe ESG controversies and those that fail to comply with internationally recognised norms and standards, and issuers identified as ESG laggards based on their ESG ratings.
U Ethical’s investment process integrates environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations to minimise risk and identify growth opportunities. Guided by our ethical philosophy, we target companies that demonstrate strong management of their societal and environmental impacts, adhering to industry best practices, standards, and voluntary frameworks.
These ESG considerations also drive our stewardship activities and inform our participation in collaborative investor initiatives. We actively monitor companies and issuers through ESG alerts, broker research, and media outlets, conducting a full monthly review, as well as interim reviews where necessary—for instance, in response to significant controversies, misconduct, or unethical business practices.
We, the Responsible Investment Association Australasia, don't earn any commission from providers or products you switch to.
