THE HISTORY OF THE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

Developed over two years with extensive industry consultation, the Responsible Investment Certification Program (formerly called the SRI Certification Program) was driven by investors requests for help in making informed choices regarding investment opportunities that take into account environmental, social, ethical and governance considerations as well as financial returns.

At the launch of the Program in September 2005, Executive Director of RIAA, Louise O’Halloran said: “With over $4 billion now invested across 100 different SRI products, it has become clear that investors need assistance when comparing apples with apples.”

The latest RIAA Benchmark Report (2010) reveals that managed responsible investment portfolios alone rose 10% from AU $14.02 billion to AU $15.41 billion. Growth in responsible investment portfolios fared better than the broader market of managed portfolios which rose 9% in that same period.

“The Symbol will act essentially as a navigational tool and aid to disclosure. It will help investors find the investments that best suits their needs and values”.

Created in partnership with the NSW Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) and the Victorian Government, the Certification Program aims to promote consistent, standardised disclosure and education about responsible investment.

The Responsible Investment Certification Program would not have been possible without the pro-bono support of:

  • Ys Communication (Symbol design and development);
  • Grant Thornton (Fund Manager verification);
  • Baker&McKenzie (legal advice), and
  • Gavin Anderson & Company (communications).

WHAT DOES THE SYMBOL MEAN?

Display of the Symbol certifies that a Licensee has adopted educational and disclosure practices relevant to their Licence category.

Applicants to licence the Symbol will be assessed pursuant to strict eligibility criteria by RIAA, with independent verification for the category of Fund Manager performed by global chartered accounting firm Grant Thornton.

Designed to act as a navigational tool, the Symbol helps consumers identify products and services that take environmental, social, ethical or governance issues into account which have been certified by RIAA.

The Symbol is intended to make it easier for consumers to compare and contrast investment opportunities and make an informed choice about responsible investment products and services.
